For the final event of my mom's birthday week celebration, we went to Wilshire Restaurant on Wilshire in Santa Monica. We went to Wilshire a few times closer to when it opened, but hadn't been back in awhile, since chef Andrew Kirschner left in February of this year, but we had a gift card since Christmas and thought this would be a nice occasion to use it. My favorite part of Wilshire is the decor; the outdoor patio is so nice with the twinkling lights and various fire pits. You feel far removed from the city life and traffic just outside on Wilshire. The food is always good, but not particularly memorable or outstanding. There are just so many other great places to eat around here, that I never particularly feel compelled to return.

Bacon and eggs: speck with poached eggs over frisee |
Steak tartare. A little bland, could have been more seasoned |
Hamachi |
Lobster garganelli: not memorable, the pasta could have had better texture |
Duck |

This was quite good, one of the two desserts we ordered, a blueberry corn cake |
We started with a bottle of sparkling from Languedoc from their wine list and brought a bottle of 2003 Opus One. It was good, but I have to say, it didn't meet my expectations. It had a nice nose and silky texture and taste, but really no finish. I expected it to be a lot more complex or interesting than it was.
